For our September 22nd Lunch and Learn, Karen Stokes will present on her latest book, The Diary of Emma LeConte: A Story of War and Survival, 1864-1865.

Karen co-edited The Diary of Emma LeConte: A Story of War and Survival, 1864-1865 along with Dr. James Kibler. When General Sherman’s cannons sounded in February 1865, seventeen year old Emma LeConte recorded eyewitness details of the invasion, sack, and burning of the city by Federal troops. Her vivid, passionate reports of all that was going on around her paint an unforgettable picture of destruction, horror and tragedy. This first fully annotated edition of Emma’s diary preserves her words as she wrote them and gathers illustrations depicting the places and events she described.

Karen Stokes is the SCHS Processing Archivist and has been with the society since 1994. She has a BA in English from the College of Charleston and an MS in library and information science from the University of South Carolina. She has published a number of articles and books including Faith, Valor and Devotion: The Civil War Letters of William Porcher DuBose, A Confederate Englishman, Days of Destruction: Augustine Thomas Smythe and the Civil War Siege of Charleston, The Immortal 600, Confederate South Carolina, and South Carolina Civilians in Sherman’s Path.
