For our November 10th Lunch and Learn, Annette Guild (SCHS Metadata Specialist) will present on her work digitizing a portion of the DuBose Heyward papers in the Society’s collection.

DuBose Heyward was a Charleston, SC author. His novel “Porgy” was dramatized in 1927, and Heyward later collaborated with George Gershwin to produce an operatic version of the story, “Porgy and Bess.” His other works include the novels “Peter Ashley” and “Mamba’s Daughters”, as well as poetry and the screenplay for “The Emperor Jones.” His wife Dorothy Heyward and his mother Jane Screven Heyward were also authors. DuBose Heyward was one of the organizers of the Poetry Society of South Carolina and was resident dramatist at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston.

The DuBose Heyward Papers, 1783- ca.1955 collection contains manuscripts and manuscript fragments of works written or co-authored by DuBose Heyward, including novels, poems, plays, short stories, film scenarios, and other written works.
