Fine Art Collection

The Fine Art Collection of the South Carolina Historical Society (SCHS) features a range of paintings, including portraits, as well as portrait busts and bas reliefs, that reflect South Carolina’s rich artistic tradition and historical narratives. Located throughout SCHS offices and administrative areas within the historic Fireproof Building, the works are not normally on public display but remain part of SCHS’ stewardship of cultural heritage.

Among the collection’s notable works are a portrait of James Louis Petigru, SCHS founder and first president; a bust and portrait of John C. Calhoun; and works created by South Carolina artists Willard Hirsch and Clark Mills. Collectively, these pieces reflect the state’s artistic legacy and the individuals who shaped its history.

Because the collection is displayed throughout the Society’s offices and administrative areas, it is not normally open for public viewing during regular museum hours.
