Education Coordinator

The South Carolina Historical Society (SCHS) seeks an energetic and detail-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills to serve as Education Coordinator for K-12 and adult programs. Working in collaboration with the SCHS staff, this individual provides leadership in planning, coordinating, and executing of the Society’s programs for students and adults. The incumbent facilitates field trips and classroom visits and plans and executes adult programs throughout the state that promote the resources of SCHS and educate and engage the public about South Carolina history. This is a 2-year term contract position.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Plans and executes programs for student groups, both at the SCHS and in classrooms, that relate to the Society’s archival resources, museum, and building, with the dual goal of sharing the stories of South Carolina and introducing the use of primary sources.
  • Plans and executes programs for adults to share stories of South Carolina and raise awareness of the Society and its resources.
  • Coordinates and schedules class visits to the museum.
  • Coordinates the SCHS Constitutional Scholar program.
  • Serves as primary contact for and assists with selection of Gignilliat Scholarship recipients.
  • Occasionally fills in at the admission desk of the SCHS museum, assists museum staff, and performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Experience with primary source archival research. Knowledge of South Carolina history preferred.
  • Experience devising, researching, preparing and leading engaging tours and presentations in a museum setting.
  • Understanding of K12 learning standards and ability to develop student educational programs tied to federal and state standards.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral), organizational, and creative thinking skills.
  • Ability to work on several projects concurrently, both individually and as part of a team.
  • Strong initiative and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to engage with a wide range of audiences and age groups.
  • Demonstrated high energy level and flexibility.
  • Software proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point required; knowledge of and experience with WordPress preferred.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in history, museum studies, education, or related field required. Post-secondary degree in history, education, or museum studies preferred. A minimum of three years of professional experience, preferably in a museum setting.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The incumbent must have a valid driver’s license and access to a car to use for local and statewide travel, with mileage reimbursement provided. Parking is provided by SCHS.

The incumbent is occasionally required to work weekends, evenings and holidays.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
The incumbent reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

WORK LOCATION:
The work will be in the SCHS headquarters in the Fireproof Building in downtown Charleston or at Addlestone Library at the College of Charleston, location of the SCHS Archives. From time to time, incumbent will travel locally and statewide for program implementation.

SALARY:
Annual salary range is $43,680 – $48,150 depending on experience. This is a two-year term contract position.
