These newsletters provide educators with document-based questions from primary sources in our collection, information about field trips and community partnerships, and announcements about scholarships and new educational offerings. Document Detectives highlights documents in SCHS’s archives and provides accompanying questions and prompts for various grade levels. Analyzing primary source documents supports South Carolina curriculum standards and deconstructed skill development. By examining these sources, students can exercise their comparative skills, explore evidence, causation, and contextualization, and identify continuity and change. As not all selected documents fit the curriculum of every class, themes will be rotated to support educators across grades 4th through 12th.
Document Based Questions
The South Carolina Historical Society’s Traveling Archive program turns your classroom into an archive. A classroom set of archival boxes filled with high-quality reproductions of SCHS collections–including maps, receipt books, letters, order books, photographs, and more–gives students the opportunity to examine primary sources. The Traveling Archive is accompanied by a career exploration activity that introduces the many uses of an archive.

The South Carolina Historical Society is pleased to present high school and undergraduate students with the opportunity to become Constitutional Scholars through a certificate program that highlights civic engagement, critical thinking, academic research, and creativity. Experience as a Constitutional Scholar will strengthen students’ college applications and resumes, and promote their development in a generation of informed and engaged future voters.

Each year the South Carolina Historical Society awards up to three Gignilliat scholarships to students of Huguenot descent. Students are judged on their compilation of a family tree, academic ability, and leadership qualifications. The Gignilliat Scholarship Fund was established in 1973 by Thomas M. Gignilliat, who stipulated that the recipients must descend from a Huguenot ancestor who settled in North America prior to November 28, 1787.
