“1776: the year of William Moultrie, Sullivan’s Island, and the Declaration of Independence.”

The year 1776 is generally remembered for the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, and perhaps for Washington’s crossing of the Delaware at Christmastime. Arguably, however, these pivotal and inspiring events might have been far less consequential but for an unknown provincial colonel and his brave but inexperienced troops. Together they faced down the might and fury of the British empire from a small unfinished log fort on an obscure South Carolina island. Dr. Chip Bragg tells the story of William Moultrie and the Battle of Sullivan’s Island—how the Americans won it, and how the British lost an opportunity to win if not shorten the Revolutionary war.
