So much of the history and culture of Beaufort can be learned and understood through the churches that for centuries have been part of the community. The stories embrace male and female, young and old, Black and White. Architecturally significant and historically important, these churches individually and collectively shape a narrative that is compelling and unique.
This self-guided walking tour will include six historic churches, which today are still vibrant centers of faith: the parish church of St. Helena, the Baptist Church of Beaufort, Wesley Methodist Church, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church, and First African Baptist Church. Dr. Larry Rowland, coauthor of the three-volume History of Beaufort County, and Dr. John McCardell, southern historian and retired vice-chancellor of Sewanee: The University of the South, will provide an opening lecture.
