The oldest inland town in South Carolina (and certainly among its most historic), served as host of the South Carolina Historical Society’s Fall Tour in 2020.
First settled as Fredericksburg Township during the reign of George II, Camden was known as Pine Tree Hill by 1758. In 1768, at the suggestion of Joseph Kershaw, the primary merchant in the settlement, the town was named in honor of Lord Camden, a parliamentary champion of colonial rights. Throughout its history, Camden has played a leading role in the affairs of the state and the nation.
